California medical license lookup and API

The Medical Board of California (MBC) publishes physician license data in more than one way, and the machine-readable options come with conditions. Here is what's available and what it means for teams verifying licenses across states.

How to get California medical license data (official sources)

  • Weekly database: MBC provides a free weekly Access database of license information. See MBC's Public Information page: mbc.ca.gov/Resources/Statistics/Public-Information.aspx.
  • Real-time API: the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) offers a real-time license API. Access requires a DCA account and a one-hour demo (same MBC page).

What this means if you verify licenses in many states

California's bulk option is a weekly database file, and its real-time option needs an account and a demo before you can start. Florida uses a daily bulk file. For a multi-state program, each state is its own integration, with its own format, refresh cadence and onboarding.

California license status through Licensy

  • One format: California results come back in the same normalized schema as the other 50 states + DC.
  • Daily monitoring: webhooks fire on status changes, you get 60-day expiry warnings, and license history is kept.
  • Two ways in: a REST API and an MCP server.
  • Coverage: physicians (MD and DO) and physician assistants.
